What this place is

“Every Wednesday night, Stem & Vine offers a perfect setting for drinks and engaging conversations with some of Baltimore’s most intriguing people.”

Kendra Q. · Google review

Stem & Vine is a Black-owned plant shop, wine and spirits bar, art gallery, and event venue at 326 N Charles Street in downtown Baltimore.

You walk in off Charles Street and the temperature changes. Plants arranged by the regions they come from. Art on every wall. A bar that treats a pour like a story worth telling. And behind all of it, three rooms you can rent for a night of your own.

Founder Quincy Goldsmith is a former metallurgical engineer and a trustee of the Baltimore Museum of Industry, which is why the STEM in our name isn't a stretch. Our plants are organized by region of origin, Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Australia, and our drink program centers Black-owned and women-owned makers. Both trace back to the same communities, and that story usually goes untold. We tell it every day.

What is a plant bar

A plant shop you can drink in

A plant bar is exactly what it sounds like: a shop where the plants are the room and the bar is part of the visit. Each side of the house carries its own weight.

The plants

Houseplants, by region

The plant-filled shop floor at Stem & Vine in downtown Baltimore

Houseplants only, arranged by where they come from rather than by price or size. No outdoor stock, no nursery trees, no cut flowers. If you're new to this, say so at the counter and you'll leave with something that suits your light and your habits.

We don't ship and we don't sell online. Plants go home with the person who picked them.

Visit the plant shop in Baltimore or read our plant care guides.

The bar

Wine, spirits, zero-proof

A bottle held up against the floral wall of the Botany Bar at Stem & Vine, Baltimore

The Botany Bar pours wine, spirits, and a zero-proof list built with the same care. The bottles lean toward Black-owned and women-owned makers, many of them Baltimore's own.

Come in for a glass, or put the whole program to work at your event.

The art

Original work, always changing

Seating and original artwork in the Gallery at Stem & Vine in Baltimore

Every wall carries original work, and it changes as the artists we show change. The Gallery doubles as a room you can rent, so Thursday's opening can be Saturday's birthday.

See the current walls in the gallery, or read what has been written about us on our press page.

The events

Yours, or ours

Two things happen here. Collaborators run their own nights in our rooms, from tastings to markets to movement classes, and those land on our events calendar. And you can rent a space for something entirely your own.

Good to know

Questions we answer every week

Do you sell plants online or ship them?

No. We don't sell plants online, we don't ship, and we don't deliver. Every plant goes home with someone who came in and picked it out, which is also how you get the guidance that comes with it.

Do you sell outdoor plants or do florist work?

Stem & Vine carries houseplants only, with no outdoor or nursery stock, and the shop doesn't do florist work or cut flowers. Houseplants at the Charles Street shop are arranged by the region they come from, Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Australia.

Can you host a private event here?

Yes. The Stem Room holds 18, the Courtyard and Greenhouse holds 30, and the Botany Bar, Garden and Gallery holds 75. A full buyout gives you all three of our spaces, exclusively yours, for up to 120 guests. Rates are on the pricing page.

Can we bring our own alcohol?

Not at Stem & Vine. Every drink here comes through our bar and our team. For events at your own venue that's different, and you can bring your own bottles through mobile bartending.

Where are you and when are you open?

326 N Charles Street, in the historic Browns Arcade in downtown Baltimore. Open Sunday and Monday 12 to 7, closed Tuesday, Wednesday 5 to 9, and Thursday through Saturday 11 to 9.

Is Stem & Vine a Black-owned plant shop?

Yes, and the bar carries that through to the shelf. Our wine and spirits list pours Black-owned and women-owned makers.

What kind of plants do you carry?

Houseplants, arranged by the region they come from. The shop runs Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Australia, so where a plant sits tells you something about how it wants to be treated.

What do you pour at the bar?

Wine, beer, cocktails, and a zero-proof list that gets the same attention as the rest. The bottles lean toward Black-owned and women-owned makers, many of them working in Baltimore and the region around it.

Do you host workshops and classes?

Yes. Happy hours, tastings, workshops, and art openings run through the month. Days and times shift, so check the events calendar before you head over.

Do you sell gift cards?

Yes. A Stem & Vine gift card spends anywhere in the shop, on plants, on a pour at the bar, or on original art from the walls.
